- little knowing she was about to start a revolution that resulted in the birth of an entire industry. Szekely and her husband managed a modest
retreat known as "Rancho La Puerta" - or "The Door" in Spanish" - which grew from a "bring-your-own-tent" health farm to a beautiful, Spanish-style
adobe resort. Eventually, in response to requests from guests for a higher level of luxury, Deborah opened a new property in 1958 that combined intensive
training in personal health with gracious hospitality, inspired by the ancient Honjin inns of Japan. As the source of inspiration for the rest of our
